Rose CO₂ Extract

Steam distillation loses most of the phenylethyl alcohol to the water phase. That is why rose water smells convincingly of rose and rose otto, for all its quality, does not quite. CO₂ keeps it in the extract.

Rose CO₂ Extract at a glance

Phenylethyl alcohol is water-soluble. In a steam distillation it partitions into the hydrosol and leaves with the rose water — which is a lovely product in its own right, but it means the oil is missing the exact compound a nose reads as fresh petal. Solvent extraction to an absolute recovers it; so does CO₂, without the residue.

We run Damask rose on the spring flush, petals in the vessel the morning they are picked. The output sits between an otto and an absolute in character: the citronellol and geraniol backbone of the distilled oil, with the fresh top the absolute is prized for.

Rose is priced by the kilo of petal, not the kilo of extract, so volumes are agreed ahead of the flush. Talk to us in the season before the one you need.

Appearance, refractive index, specific gravity, moisture by Karl Fischer and extraction yield are checked on every single batch.

Actives go through HPLC. Heavy metals through ICP-MS against EU and USFDA limits. Pesticide residues by multi-residue GC-MS against EU MRLs. Residual CO₂ is confirmed below the 0.1% food-safe threshold by headspace GC.
